re: michael’s camera and further offtopic

in response to second location on wheeties@blogspot

yea , lustre is often best.
funny about the camera , d’you know what exactly happened ? i’m sure you could get it fixed for less than that, ironically enough, somewhere around chinatown [lots of dirt cheap electro/mechanical geniuses as in a lot of the third world , they work magic with really old electronics (inherently much easier to fix small problems)] there really is very limited professional photography services around the district. did you know there isn’t a single photoshop in DC or MD that buys proper b&w photo paper .. that is honestly ridiculous

professional photoshops are really limited around DC , i’ve actually talked with some friends about starting up a co-op digital [photographic process] printing location around here ; but it’s seemingly more and more likely that i won’t be around for long so it’s not quite worthwhile .. it would have been cool and all [i spent a while researching what’s involved and it’s really quite feasibly if you share rent and finance the LED/laser photo printer itself] , but i know a good place in ottawa for these things so i don’t know if i would do it there either.

.. in other news i’ve found a place somewhere that’ll print metallic b&w paper which will be very good ; i’m also preparing/plotting for a whole lot of ridiculously-large-format prints [i.e finding wallspace and/or worthy recipients] , very much looking forward to them

also , have been sailing (with friends) for the past week .. great stuff although the potomac is without doubt some of the filthiest water in the world , still great fun … hadn’t been sailing in a long while ; also cuba is being postponed to the winter [makes more sense climate-wise] however i will then have the chance to get my egyptian [read:notlegit] scuba license renewed [essentially redo all the training that i never did but should have] before hand]
i had tickets to the eels on tuesday but couldn’t make it , fortunately i found means of transfering them to a friend and he enjoyed the show for me

… and finally [it’s been a while]

about polar bears.

k well i’m a little surprised as to how few [if any] people actually picked up on the whole polar bear(s) drowing [the guy is obviously unhappy, and polar bears are absolutley always grinning unless they’re drowning] because of global warming thing but well yea it’s kind of bad how few people really realize that polar bears are drowning because of melting ice caps … of course it is merely one extent of the immediate damage of the relatively unconstrained greenhouse effect.

just thought that everyone should know, why.

in other news, my 77percent,com postcards & poster came today .. lookin’ great ; not that i really need to do any proper propaganda work but i rather like the postcards, would have made for great [read:easy&likeable] yrbk stuffers . other than that they are pretty cool .. print qual was better than expected tho not as great as a proper CMYK process can be ; altho the poster came out real niice

silverdocs.

in other news, just so everyone knows, silverdocs is an annual documentary film festival [sponsored by AFI and the discovery channel], it starts tuesday/jun14 and runs through the sunday/jun19 in ‘the heart of’ silverspring.
i’ll try to remember to bring in a film guide thing that i picked up somewhere on monday, but all that stuff is available online
the festival also encourages/supports international film-making/filmmakers and has a dedicated section for films made in or by developing countries , there’s a lot of stuff that sounds interesting so i’ll be there some days whether or not anyone wins tickets (in case anyone wants to join me).

also there’s an event on upcoming.org for it to facilitate .. i don’t know ; the upcoming.org is kinda cool for finding stuff in the area but i’m not too sure that it’s overwhelmingly useful for organizing groups and shit because no one uses it , but it could be ..
another thing almost worth mentioning , the eels will be at ninethirtyon tues28/jun , should be good .. i’ve just been starting to listen to them after having them recommended by a bunch of individuals

love you, mpix.

another parcel from mpix arrived today (yes , saturday delivery) which shipped thursday afternoon, less than twenty four hours after i ordered them .. and they’re absolutely great.
these are all b&w prints [printed on proper b&w photo paper] .. results came out damn awesome , i was afraid they might come out faded or lacking contrast because of the source files , but mpix fixed that up and still got them to me quicker than usual.
i also had one print finished/mounted-on-matboard for an extra few dollars , and it’s very very nicely done … i don’t think i could be more satisfied with mpix , those b&w prints are real real niice

silverdocs tkts.

anyone interested in the possibility of free silverdocs tickets
be sure to click here for a free pass/tickets giveaway from WAMU
also if that doesn’t work out if any one wants to join me for silver docs sometime next week, post finals or over the coming weekend be sure to make yourself known.
DISCLAIMER:anyone who wins must share their extra ticket with me in the event that i do not

the united parcel service.

mr buck’s m&ms weren’t meant to be shipped until tomorrow , however magic tends to prevail thus they shipped yesterday and arrived this afternoon . my 8×10s from mpix arrived yesterday [the power went out as i was breaking the seal on the envelope] , metallic paper turned out quite .. brilliant . altho a little over brilliant on photos with too much white and i think tan/limestone -type colours come out a little over saturated , the prints overall are very nice and some came out almost holographic in some lights .. i was very relieved because the metallic paper was an experiment … quite fortunately it came out for the better.

finals are far from friendly.

the brother came by for the weekend , pleasant relief .. definitely accomplished very little more than zero learning this weekend ; however i did realize that my history notes were kind of ridiculously complete, i surprised myself .. most of michael’s stuff that i photocopied [and that i still quite greatly appreciate] was in fact redundant … i blame the unusual completeness on the relative increase in interestingfulness [it’s a word now] of the year’s curriculum at least compared with past years’ /etc

in other news lawrence [brother] ’s Rebel XT (canon d-slr) is simply amazing .. firstly he’s got some great lenses to match it , but alone that has got to be one of the most supreme mass-produced cameras around … i love SLRs i have a couple old Minolta and Canon ones that i use every now and then for super-analog b&w stuff which i refuse to scan [ my ilford prints are just too good/divine for any digital process ] .. but the XT is so ideal as far as a d-slr can be ; of course it lacks the form factor of smaller digital cameras but honestly i’m not too keen on ridiculously small cameras : they certainly don’t do any good for the pictures , and their form factor really isn’t worth it :]
goodness, the XT is easily the idyllic combination of a real nice canon eos conventional film slr and a premium digital camera ; most importantly b&h is selling one for under a thousand (body only , but i have some more-than-decent compatible canon lensesaround)

[if you’re scanning for the end of the xt ramble here it is].
anyways though this weekend has been nicely chilled and it’s a great thing

really looking forward to these metallic prints that should be coming soon, they shipped friday afternoon [turnaround at mpix was precisely half their predicted 24hrs] i’m a little pissed that i was too impatient to send them the pics at proper resolution [i sent 300dpi while they’re capable of nearly ten times that] quite fortunately my resampling is of great quality and well i think they’ll come out pretty nicely .. i’m thinking of getting some or all mounted but it’s a bit of a hassle so i can’t say for sure … in other news my dirt cheap printers [winkflash.com] printed 60 of my better shots on 4×6 for a total of just over $5 including shipping ; they’d be lucky to break even on that, in fact i’m relatively confident they lost money on it [it was a promotional offer] quality was excellent and printing was prompt ; i didn’t quite know what i would do with those prints when i got them but i’ve since decided to cover two 20×30 foam-core boards with them and toss it on my wall somewhere . spent some time arranging the bunch of them earlier today , lookin’ good i must say
those metallic prints are going to be pretty damn great , the prints should actually arrive before the pape- sample-kit, which i ordered from them a half week before the prints, get here .. i would have loved to see sample paper before i got these 8×10s printed on the metal stuff but i really did want to give to vaughn&buck and there wasn’t much room for delay so i figured i’d go ahead with it .. metallic prints were 2.49 for each 8×10 [pretty decent considering how i spent $55 on 50x sheets of Ilford’s heaviest inkjet paper (which looks great btw)] …
but yea .. they’re gonna be great

also in case you have yet to notice, i got this monkey and it’s a sort of magical monkey , and he’s going to pick you a new song every time you reload the page. do play with him, he likes to be played with.
.. fuck it , i don’t think that he’s actually a monkey, monkey smell bad .. he’s a sloth because he’s lazy and all he does all day is pick songs for you when you load a page , except he’s still magic and as a result doesn’t smell like crap
yea, sloths are cool like that ; particularly magical ones …
i like abusing semicolons .. mr heilman think we can’t handle the semicolon when in fact the semicolon can’t handle us and he just wants to protect it
yea i think it’s time i got some rest , g’night everyone

[definitely been in the process of ending the post for the last ten lines]
