because i’ve decided the run wikib.org as my ‘project’ for IB/ITGS i’m going to be unavoidably investing way more time than i have in the past (because it’s success determines a portion of a portion of my diploma), so keep your eyes open and i’m also hoping this might spur some further investment on the parts of others not to say that everyone’s help has already been phenomenally Good.
unfortunately this might put the postal service / 96prints (i had wanted to use that name from the start but i thought it might be kind of cheap, but, now that i think about it, since it’s a completely different sort of entity it’d be more of a respect thing than stealing a name (much like [apple / applerecords(thebeatleslabel)] altho i might end up using it as the motto rather than the actual name, since we need to be able to achieve i’m-feeling-lucky status so we’ll have to have a unique name)) onto the back burner for longer than i’d like.
if you’re curious about 96prints~,the postal service and aren’t in the know (it’s ok not everyone is as cool as everyone else, that would defeat the whole point) you can give me a ring of some sort (ims and email count). if you need a hint, you might be particularly interested in the project if you have any/all of the following a) entrepreneurial zest/ambition b) artistic ability of any level that you enjoy c) programm-ability experience or ambition with either php or rubyonrails or even flash and/or ideally, but far from likely, some time on your hands
in other news i had some illness going on and off since thursday, but i’d say that i’m better now.
so i’m in canada, in need of active hours (we love you IB) and i like microbrews : hence curling this evening, should be hilarious.
another thing, billmonk.com went live, it’s a social billing service designed for settling IOUs and the like amoungst friends, very clever and well thought out design.
a little discussion with the civil netizen folk, in case you’re interested (probably not)
it’s all about social direct p2p file transfer, starts off with me just comparing them with pando with the goal of discovering what really made them different (besides the stated ideals behind the project), and now i’ve got it, straight from horse’s mouth. special indeed
So what makes Civil Netizen special? Well, for one we have spent a lot of time working on solving a very fundamental problem on the Internet. That is, computers behind the NAT (network address translation) of home routers have trouble connecting to each other directly. Even the BitTorrent protocol requires users behind NATs to map certain ports on the router to get decent speed (by avoiding relying on computers with open IPs). Techniques such as UPnP are less than universally supported and, unfortunately, not turned on by default on common router models. We believe we have come up with a NAT traversal solution that requires no end-user configuration.
With this first beta release, we have begun the first large-scale public testing of our custom networking stack, which chooses between a few known strategies that have been circulating in the peer-to-peer technology circles. So far the results we have collected on NAT-to-NAT connections have been promising. We believe that solving the NAT problem will enable a new class of Internet applications that does not rely on expensive, centralized web-based services. When combined with BitTorrent-style multi-source download strategies, the overall download speed and success rate would be much improved over the current generation of implementations, especially for torrents (or parcels in Civil-speak) with very few seeds and peers. Given the “long tail” nature of the Internet, serving the low seed/peers use case is particularly important.

well it turns out, i’ve had something wrong with my comments posting php
it’s been fixed and i’m thinking that the bug has been there since we upgraded to wordpress2.0 the comments never made it to the database ; so if i missed yours, i’m sorry and please do try again.
the story (read:rumour/unverified)
sometime ago , the Norwegian diplomat Charung Gollar was asked to make a
presentation at the UN focusing on the main problems affecting the world
(2004).
his presentation consisted of 8 slides and was titled “The Power of
Atars”; he was applauded for its simplicity.
in spite of having no pretension at all, his work has been selected to
participate for the Nobel Prize of Political Marketing.
|electric sheep|
definitely the cleverest and most beautiful screen saver conceivable.
It is an electronic dream that continuously evolves (in flocks with other computers through interweb) to be aesthetically pleasing, very very cool indeed.
As electricsheep plays the random but magically intertwined CG renders , the viewer determines the survival of each render, or sheep, by hitting ‘up’/'down’. Each sheep/render has the equivalent of a genetic code, which determines every aspect of the render, hence as the most beautiful sheep survive and the flock evolves, the most appealing characteristics of sheep (most commonly surviving bits of DNA) become more prominent and the whole flock (around the world) becomes more and more beautiful.
yea so i’ve been really neglecting 77percent for a long while and it’s an awful shame … i’ve been pretty happy in recent days, despite getting out a whole week later than the luckier folk in dc. the snow is some crazy stuff; surely it’s a pain a lot of the time, but like many things of that nature, it can be great fun the rest of the time. my shoes took a heavy beating but they’ve now been replaced. my photo-taking has been in a real slumber since i got here and it’s a shame, i don’t think that i have much of an excuse but yea i’m going to work on rectifying that over the holidays.
i was thinking that i should start-up some daily things on 77percent, including (but hopefully not limited to) most probably a song du jour, any suggestions are welcomed.
also i would thank cafenut (sorry it took me so long, it’s been on a list for some time now) for the tagging and altho i’d usually steer away from memes (never before) here it goes:
five little known facts about myself
- i fell backwards into the snow friday and didn’t want to get back up : i’m enjoying the snow.
- i don’t like to support bigger companies: when given the choice i avoid it. / i drink fiji water because i’d much rather support Fiji than coca-cola corp. (let alone pepsico), if available i would drink ethos.
- i have a stuffed muskrat on my desk, you should too.
- i try not to let things affect me unless they really ought to in which case i think it’s important not to ignore them.
- fin-du-semaine get together this friday chez moi.
be there.
the underlined are suggestions/instructions from me to you
i would also suggest that you follow my good example and write out five little known facts about yourself

posting has been pretty erratic since i got to canada, i’ll blame the climate.
anyways though i’ve been putting off writing about some really cool things including but not exclusive to
wonder what this is about, don't you?
just so everyone interested and anyone else knows , wikib is coming along. being inevitably understaffed we’re still playing catchup (as we had originally hoped to avoid) but it’s a’happening and momentum is naturally building up : so anyone who missed the ground floor is still welcome (we‘re friendly[not desperate] like that) email me and i’ll fill you in on the password necessary to make changes and to otherwise contribute
no hard feelings
keep it classy folks

i haven’t seen much goodness on threadless in a long while. when i was reminded of their annual $10 holiday sale, i figured i’d give them another chance. now while i still would recommend them over bustedtees or defunker (these two are both a part of ‘connected ventures( the good people behind vimeo, collegehumor as well as others) they also print on americanapparel tees which are of a generally great standard]
speaking of which defunker is now offering some cool beanies
(this is significant in my new climate).
those of you curious about what i’ve been listening to /etc are more than welcome to check it out, as good as live on last.fm .
alright everyone well i know things here have been slow.
well plans for a 77percent sponsored movie night have long since been in the works, anyone who wants in should submit requests as comments to this post and we’ll figure out our premiere piece.
96postal will happen someday and it’s gonna be great, real great.
also the playlist (that you’re listening to right now, unless of course you’re a silent pansy) has been messed with, some new stuff (long overdue) and some reorganization .. most of the easy links for controlling the music are not broken but rather intentionally surprising, so yea take your pick and we’ll see how lucky you are. one day i’ll update those so that they aren’t as blatantly misleading; until then, good luck.
o yea and just for the record : sushi in ottawa isn’t half bad, not to mention relatively cheap.
otherwise worth mentioning,
adbusters arrived monday.
math could have been much much worse.
in other news,
halloween is soon, rumour has it will snow or will have snowed before th’eve and it frightens me. anyone with suggestions should share them, fallback is probably elwood. also the brother’s in town for the weekend / his birthday.
and my present to the angstier of you : bubblewrap.77percent.com (not my own creation, but redirected for the pleasure of your memories)
speaking of which,
the awesome dessert-firstly restaurant memories is awesome.
keep it classy
, folks
well i don’t know if anyone might concievable remember but so long ago i did some sort of a weekly tune-give-away thing because i had a lot of bandwidth and i was rather annoyed having it go to waste. well nowadays i have so much more bandwidth so might i announce the start [hopefully i’ll remember to keep it up] of 77percent’s very own screens, yours. every now and then i’ll be hosting a full and proper film that i rather liked up for grabs right here until it pisses off my host at which point we can think about doing it torrent-wise.
all films will run in vlc, the open-source multi-platform videolan player.
