summertime

just around the corner …

three sevenths

rumour has it (thanks to a couple of confusing voicemessages) lawrence has found a 77% chocolate, and it’s thus in the mail headed my way.
for those of you not old enough to remember, 77percent originated as a concept for a chocolate factory, my chocolate factory. Our mission was the production of a very finest mix of darker chocolates which were otherwise unavailable. Everyone knows dark chocolates rocks all socks; but there are varying levels of darkness such as almostdark (seventy percent) and tropnoir (eightyfive percent). We wanted to mix the two, hence producing a range of chocolates from 77.1% to 77.9%, my favorite mix would innevitably be 77.7% this is because there would naturally be very little difference in taste throughout the range and i think that three 7s in a row look cool.

in any case this does not mean our mission is over. in fact, this gives us further initiative as we aim to produce the finest chocolate, SeventySeven(point)Seven[DARK]. also announcing the newest addition to our planned family of chocolates, 3Sevenths[LIGHT] : a creamy mix of fiine chocolate.

LolliLove

LolliLove is the first feature film I produced. It’s about a wealthy but severely misguided married couple , who set out to make a difference in the lives of the homeless by starting a charity that hands out lollipops to homeless people. Not just any old lollipops, mind you, but ones with wrappers emblazoned with James’ artwork…which is designed to inspire them to live better lives, get jobs, use birth control, etc.
It’s a “mockumentary” that takes satiric aim at wealthy types who get involved in charitable causes for ultimately selfish and self-serving reasons.

it is directed by and stars Jenna Fischer of the office on NBC
looks great i’d suggest anyone in need of something to watch … to watch it.

a few other things:

  • fake model photography by recedinghairline.co.uk : an interesting bit on taking making real photographs look like scale models.
  • PeerFlix is a cool service (though i’m not using it myself, i could imagine others making great use of it) for trading your existing DVDs with people who want them, in exchange for credits with which you can get other people’s dvds that you want (p2p equivalent of netflix, clever idea indeed)
  • C6 carbon fibre iPod case, damn cool looking and relatively cheap. made from real aerospace carbon fiber, aluminum, and stainless steel screws
  • evoke.tv is merely a tvguide website but it’s got real clean, mean design pumped full with ajax and some social functions, unfortunately no canadian listings (yet)
  • also very cool high speed capture of a bullet shooting through a playing card
  • the slanket : yes it’s a sleeved blanket.
  • robotic flying shotgun
  • o and bustedtees is doing a [subtle, as is the trend these days

commencement speeches

a few interesting commencement speeches i ran into recently, for your motivational reading pleasure

secret sale

there’s a secret sale on threadless ending this saturday

it’s not published anywhere on threadless.com but if  you enter tenbucks87 as the coupon code on any order of at least three tees, they’ll each cost only $10

a few other codes also exist, supposedly
tenbucks20, tenbucks45, tenbucks34, tenbucks85

enjoy.

talk.wikib

announcing the brand new spanking talking-place for wikib
at talk.wikib.org

if you ask me it’s pretty damn cool and well worth checking out
enjoy …

every one who signs up real soon will get one free favour from me

speaking of which, wikib is still storming along, we still haven’t reach our goal of 100% notes completion but we’re always making progress. It’s a great way of keeping all your notes together (and with the help of everyone else working on wikib) much easier than typing them up on your own, also perhaps more comprehensive (if you see something missing in someone’s writeup, you/anyone can easily add it). Everything on wikib is fulltextsearchable and crossreferenced (through use of wikilinks , ask), not to mention impossible to lose and superneat.

incentive: the most valuable contributor(s) on wikib will be awarded

a couple of threadless tees (plus anything else anyone wants to offer)

this offer goes out to any contributor anywhere so long as they’re contributing good quality notes on relevant IB courses, this is not a quantitative evaluation but rather a combination of quality/value/quantity.

also please note, this is not a desperate cry for help but rather an expression of appreciation for the hard work that goes into making wikib possible

thanks everyone and good luck

keep it classy,
~j.out

a little bit of

a few more artists that i’ve been digging recently :

  • Animal Collective (british version of broken social scene)
  • broken social scene (canadian chillout)
  • the new pornographers (canadian indie rock at its finest)
  • arctic monkeys (in case you haven’t heard, is thestrokes meets franzferdinand)
  • Feist (kind of folksy female vocal jazz)

some new albums worth mentioning:

  • the life pursuit by belle&sebastian
  • Sing-A-Longs And Lullabies For The Film Curious George (by jack johnson)
  • parliament funkadelic

decemberists

does anyone else know the decemberists ?
i heard some of their stuff a few days ago (on last.fm), and i’m really digging them

give them a listen, i’ll pando you some of their stuff if you’d like (just ask) although i’d really urge you purchase some merch (perhaps including a cd) from the artist if you appreciate them.

30boxes

i’m thinking that we’re going to use 30boxes for sharing calendar information in wikib (homework and whatnot) .. it’s nice and cleanly designed, very simple and perfectly functional

if you’re looking around at these sorts of things, i would look at rememberthemilk.com (more of a powerful todo list with duedates+reminders) and spongecell.com (for a more calendar style system plus great natural-language querying and easy input from phones and email)

in other news gmail is going to soon have gtalk integrated into it, lookin good.

we’re still looking for artwork for 96postal, have a word with me sometime if you want to have something to do with the launch.

pbwiki

alright well in case you’ve never noticed, wikib is hosted by pbwiki.com (pb:peanut butter), now they’re an awesome bunch who’ve made it as easy and simple as is concievably possible to run your own wiki. i would highly recommend them anyday and now that they’ve offered to double my storage i will finally get around to it.

you can use your own wiki to store (publicly or privately) any form of structured data. wikib uses it for storing all of our (IB) notes for all our courses in a neat supercrossreferenced and searchable manner, it’s superamazingfantastic and i don’t know what we’d do without it.
be sure to check out their tour if you think you might want your own wiki (for personal or social/collaborative/group use) or if you’re just curious

personal dna + riffs

in the past i avoided signing up for riffs because i was idealistically against the whole centralisation of opinions thing , but well i tried it out (and i’m hating that they’ve tagged me as having signing up in february when i’ve known them for many months now)
well anyways, riffs is a real nifty webservice for exchanging views on all sorts of stuffs/people/things , it’s real nicely put together and a cool opinion community : well worth checking out

and about personaldna they do the one and only personality-analysis quiz that i would ever recommend others spend their time with. it’s really well done and focuses on fundamentals of a person’s character, it’ll even translate their analysis into myers-briggs style code. so yea if you’re looking for a good way to quantitate your character, be sure to check it out.

also worth mentioning is spongecell, a very cool ajax-powered calendaring system which really excels in its ability to interpret natural-language queries and whatnot , also very slick sms/email based i/o
also see techcrunch’s profile.

standpoint.com

very cool socially driven site all about people’s beliefs
real nicely done, well worth checking out.

postal

the postal service is going to happen

we’ve got our head developer on task (rule#1 no one’s working over the break)
and i’m looking forward to a launch well before spring break,
it’s gonna be great but it’ll need great content in order for it to be anything, so let’s do this.
anyone with input of any sort, particularly the creatives, should reach me or comment
we’re looking for almost any sort of static visual 2d artwork that’s good lookin’
witty comics, colourful doodles or drawings, digital artwork, photography, these are not limits but merely ideas
we’re open to anything and capable of just about anything 2d , 6″x9″

give me a ring [613/8844669 (mob), 613/4826341 (vonage), j77percent (on gizmo or skype)
or an email to postalservice [at] 77percent.com, j [at] 77percent.com on msn, j77percent on aim, jeevs77 on y!m]

arctic monkeys

been meaning to post on them
they’re a great sound out of the UK, made number one before they got signed by Domino (debut platform of franzferdinand and others).
if you’d like a copy of their album email me and i’ll get it to you

the same applies for the new strokes album, first impressions of earth
another awesome listen
speaking of which, the lead from the strokes endorsed arctic monkeys and he’s known to be rather picky to say the least. both are great melodic rock albums.

i’d describe the arctic monkeys as a mix between franz ferdinand and the strokes actually, a great sound that i’d really recommend if you like either.

listen up.

(the arctic monkeys are NOT up)

newsvine

another thing, if anyone wants an invite to newsvine (a very cool social news website) let me know and i’ll hook you up.
